Terpene Preservation: How to Keep Your Extracts Flavorful & Potent

  • by

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds responsible for cannabis’ flavor, aroma, and effects. However, they are highly volatile and can easily be lost during extraction. Here’s how to preserve terpenes and keep your extracts top-tier:

1. Use Low Temperatures

High heat destroys terpenes! Keep extraction temps below 110°F (43°C) when possible.

If pressing rosin, stay between 170-200°F (76-93°C) to retain flavor.

2. Fresh-Frozen Over Cured Material

Live resin and live rosin retain more terpenes because they use fresh-frozen flower instead of dried and cured material.

Curing can degrade delicate terpenes over time.

3. Purge Gently

If using BHO or ethanol extraction, vacuum purge at low temps (~85°F or 29°C) to avoid terpene loss.

Over-purging can lead to flavorless extracts.

4. Store Extracts Properly

Heat, light, and oxygen degrade terpenes quickly.

Store extracts in airtight glass containers in a cool, dark place.

For long-term storage, refrigerate or freeze at below 40°F (4°C).

5. Avoid Over-Aggitation

Excessive stirring or whipping introduces oxygen, which can degrade terpenes.

For live resin and sauce, let it naturally separate into diamonds and terp sauce instead of over-mixing.

Final Tip:

If your extract smells weak or loses flavor quickly, chances are terpenes are evaporating due to heat or exposure. Keep them locked in by controlling temperature, airflow, and storage conditions!
